Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met at the Maximos Mansion with Amazon’s Panos Panay, focusing on the new AWS Local Zone in Athens, the Greek language on Kindle and Alexa, and new investments in satellite infrastructure, research and green energy.

AWS Local Zone in Athens, available starting in July

With Amazon Senior Vice President, Panos Panay, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met this morning at the Maximos Mansion with Amazon’s Senior Vice President,Panos Panay, with the main topic being the strengthening of the company’s presence in Greece and the new investment opportunities opening up in the country.

During the meeting, Mr. Panay briefed the Prime Minister on the progress of the investment by Amazon Web Services (AWS) to create a new Local Zone in Athens, which is expected to be generally available starting in July.

The new infrastructure will enable businesses and organizations operating in Greece to store and process data within the country, meeting local storage requirements. At the same time, they will be able to develop applications with extremely low response times and leverage advanced computing power services, storage, networking, and artificial intelligence, with high levels of security.

Kindle and Alexa: Greek language coming soon

A significant part of the discussion was also devoted to the integration of Greek language into Amazon’s ecosystem of devices and software.

Mr. Panay noted that the Greek alphabet will be available in the future to users of the Kindle and Alexa platforms, in a way that reflects the natural use of the language, without relying exclusively on automated processes.

New investments – Satellite internet and research

The meeting also included an overview of Amazon’s existing Amazon investments in Greece, while additional opportunities for cooperation and development were explored.

Investment opportunities related to infrastructure for the Amazon Leo satellite internet service, projects green energy projects, and the creation of new cutting-edge research facilities.

For his part, the Prime Minister highlighted the high caliber of Greece’s human resources and universities, noting that they are key factors for the development of the ecosystem startup ecosystem and attracting research and technology investments across the country.
