The case of a German three-month-old infant who had been missing since Thursday evening (June 18) in the Renningen area, near Stuttgart.
Authorities announced that the body of the deceased infant had been found, and all evidence indicates that it is the child whom police, rescue workers, and volunteers had been searching for for hours.
The body was found in a rural area between Renningen and Malmheim. It was immediately transported for the necessary examinations and official identification. So far, the authorities have not released any information regarding the exact cause of death.
Germany: How the infant went missing
According to the mother’s statement, she had the child with her at a store in the Rewe chain, about 800 meters from their home. Upon returning home, she left the infant in the stroller for a few minutes to bring the groceries inside.
When she came back outside, the baby had disappeared.
A spokesperson for the Ludwigsburg police, Steffen Grabenstain, told Bild: “The child was left unattended for a short time, and an unknown person snatched the baby from the stroller and took it away.”
Massive mobilization by the authorities
The infant’s disappearance prompted an immediate mobilization by German authorities. Approximately 50 police officers, dozens of rescue workers, and 40 specially trained search-and-rescue dogs from the German Red Cross participated in the search.
At the same time, helicopters and drones equipped with thermal cameras were deployed, and special police units were activated to locate the child.
As of now, no suspect has been arrested. The Criminal Investigation Department of Ludwigsburg continues to gather evidence, in an effort to clarify exactly what happened in the case that has shocked the German public.
