World Music Day Music finds Attica this year filled with events, concerts, and cultural activities with free admission for the public.
The festival, which began as a European initiative on the occasion of the Summer Solstice, has evolved into an international celebration dedicated to music and its power to bring together people of different ages and cultures.
The National Garden is the focal point of the events
The Municipality of Athens is dedicating this year’s event to the National Garden. At 12:00 p.m., the City Choir will present a program ranging from Negro Spirituals and musicals to pop and rock.
At 7:00 p.m., a concert by the Greek Music Workshop will follow, featuring songs and compositions by Mikis Theodorakis, Yannis Spanos, Stavros Xarchakos, Dionysis Savvopoulos, and other notable composers.
The curtain falls at 9:00 p.m. at the Zappeion Gardens Amphitheater with the Athens Big Band.
Tributes to Theodorakis and Kazantzidis
In Agia Paraskevi, the choral concert “Mikis Theodorakis: 100 Years of Choral Music” will take place at 8:00 p.m. at the city’s 1st and 2nd Vocational High Schools and Technical College.
According to the municipal authorities, the event “is a tribute to the power of music to unite people, cultures, and generations, while honoring the great musical legacy of the renowned Greek composer.”
Participants include the Agia Paraskevi Municipal Mixed Choir, the Emporiki Bank Mixed Choir, the Orpheus Choir of Tripoli, and the Mandolinata – Agios Panteleimonas of Acharnes Choir, while the opera soloists Eleni Davou and Antonis Koronaios will also be in attendance.
In Nea Ionia, the second part of the two-day events at the Panaitolio is dedicated to Stelios Kazantzidis. The concert “Stelios’ Roots — MUSICAL MEMORY AND REFUGEE IDENTITY IN NEA IONIA” will take place at 9:00, featuring the Estudiantina of Nea Ionia, Magnesia; Aspasia Stratigou; Thodoris Mermigas; and Vasilis Lekkas.
Musical evenings in squares and neighborhoods
In Aigaleo, the Municipal Philharmonic Orchestra will give a concert at 8:00 p.m. in Eleftherios Venizelos Square, presenting a program featuring milestones of Greek music. Featuring Rena Strouliou.
In Vyronas, the “Neighborhoods of Culture 2026” Festival will host the concert “Let Me Remind You of a Thousand Nights” featuring Giorgos Kampanellis, at Nikolaidis-Karea Square.
In Lavreotiki, the “Thorikia 2026” Festival continues with a tribute to the great composers of Greek music, in the courtyard of the Agios Konstantinos Elementary School.
Peristeri is celebrating with a concert by the Modern Music Department of the Municipal Conservatory in Town Hall Square, while in Chalandri the Woodwind Quintet and the Brass Quintet of the Philharmonic Orchestra will perform works from the international repertoire in the central square.
Activities for children and music lovers
In Ilioupoli, the Municipality’s Music Workshops will open their doors to the public for a special “open day.” Visitors will be able to explore musical instruments, attend open classes, and enjoy short concerts by the students.
The program includes early music education for children ages 4 to 6, as well as presentations by the piano, accordion, guitar, electric guitar, and folk instrument departments.
International collaborations and large choirs
In Kifissia, the Friends of Music Association, the Norwegian Embassy, and Pyrna are organizing a concert at Kifissia Park.
Taking the stage will be the 100-member Musica Friends of Music Choir, the Songlaget i BUL i Oslo choir, and the Athens University Symphony Orchestra. The program culminates with Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Choral Fantasy.”
Meanwhile, in Papagos-Cholargos, the concert “Young People Celebrate Europe… Through Music” will take place on Monday at the City Hall’s outdoor theater, featuring the Children’s and Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens.
From the center of Athens to the northern, western, and southern suburbs, this year’s World Music Day transforms Attica into one big open-air stage, giving the public the opportunity to enjoy all kinds of musical experiences for free.
