An alarm was sounded at noon in the Metsovo area when a firefighting helicopter participating in an aerial firefighting operation crashed under circumstances that remain unclear at this time.

The accident involving a firefighting helicopter that occurred at noon during an aerial firefighting operation in the “Avgo” area of Grevena.

According to a statement from the Fire Department , a BELL helicopter, leased by the Fire Department, crashed into the Aos Reservoir, on the border between the prefectures of Grevena and Ioannina, while participating in the operation to extinguish the fire.

The aircraft had taken off from Ioannina Airport and had two people on board: a Greek pilot and a foreign national serving as a liaison.

Despite the severity of the incident, both crew members were rescued, a fact that brought relief to the forces involved in the operation.

The circumstances under which the helicoptercrashed into the lake remain unknown at this time and are being investigated by the relevant authorities, while rescue teams were immediately mobilized to the scene to safely recover the occupants.
