A few days before the summit of NATO, to be held on July 7 and 8, the Turkish authorities launched a new wave of detentions on terrorism charges in various regions of the country.

According to the state news agency Anadolu, which cites a statement from the Ankara prosecutor’s office, 178 of the 225 people who had been taken into custody have now been remanded in custody, while 34 people have been released on probation.

Journalists and civil society representatives in the crosshairs

The Turkish NGO MLSA (Media and Law Studies Association) reported yesterday that among those arrested are journalists, academics, lawyers, union members, teachers, students and other members of civil society.

Among those who have been detained is Yildiz Tar, editor-in-chief of the magazine LGBT+ Kaos GL, Emel Memis, a professor of economics at the University of Ankara, as well as Nevzat Özer from the Tema Foundation.
