The University is a colorful place of knowledge delivery. And it has a soul. It is a vibrant institution, a multi-layered space for the meeting of ideas, dialogue and interaction.

Within it, not only scientific thought is cultivated, but consciences, values and social attitudes are formed. Through this constant osmosis, both the members of the university community, students, faculty and employees of the university, and the very character of the institution itself are affected in both directions.

At a time when the international reality is characterized by polarization, war conflicts, social tensions and profound geopolitical upheavals, the role of Universities becomes even more critical. It is no longer enough to transmit knowledge; it requires active participation in public discourse and contribution to shaping a more coherent and rational world.

Significantly, the public intervention of the Dean of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Gerasimos Siasos, who in his article entitled “Science in a world on fire” highlights the importance of knowledge and dialogue as prerequisites for avoiding historical mistakes and building sustainable societies. While reminding us of an obvious but often forgotten truth: that Universities are not just educational institutions, but institutions of democracy and critical thinking. This point takes on particular importance in an environment where public debate is often reduced to slogans and easy divisions.

As the country’s oldest university institution, the RCCA confirms this mission in practice. With actions of extroversion and substantial intervention in society, it does not limit itself to its academic role, but acts as a bearer of social awareness. In this context, the Health Festival “Food for Action”, held on 21 March 2026, is also part of the Health Festival aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and strengthening the link between science and everyday life. “Eu zain” in practice, by incorporating good nutritional choices in the daily diet and promoting regular physical activity from childhood.

At the same time, the international presence and the distinctions of its students confirm the high level of studies provided, reinforcing the institution’s position on the global academic map. Participation in international competitions and successful representation of the country constitute not only academic success but also a form of intellectual diplomacy. A recent example is the outstanding success of the team of undergraduate students of the Athens Law School in the world round of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, which was held in Washington, D.C., United States of America. The Greek participation was ranked 6th in the world for its performance in the written part of the competition.

The establishment of the Association of Alumni and Friends of the University of Athens, with the symbolic and honorary participation of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who co-signed the relevant founding act, is of particular importance. This initiative highlights the long-standing influence of the Foundation and strengthens the links between the university community and the wider society.

In a world that is being tested, the University must remain a beacon of knowledge, critical thinking and social responsibility. The CSF proves that it can respond to this challenge, not as an isolated institution, but as an active participant in shaping the future.
