Died at the age of 98, the great thespian, Stephenos Linaeus.

The actor passed away a few days ago, at his home with his beloved wife also an actress, Elli Fotiou by his side. His funeral was scheduled for today, Wednesday 22 April, in a private family circle.

Stefanos Linaeuswas a Greek actor, writer, director and theatre entrepreneur, while he was also involved in politics, as a member of PASOK and MP for Athens in 1989-1990.

He graduated from the Athens Theatre School in 1951 and in 1969 from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. Between 1954 and 1967 he worked with more than 20 companies in 100 plays, and appeared in 100 films, radio and television. From 1970 he directed and took part in 50 plays and many radio and television programmes.

He was the founder of the Founding Director of the Contemporary Greek Theatre at the Alpha Theatre in Athens. He wrote short stories such as “Some Deaths” and many studies including “Contemporary Theatre” and “TV medium of Education”, which was taken into account in the establishment of the educational television of ERT.

He served as general secretary of the Association of Greek Actors in 1966-1967, when he was dismissed by the junta because of his political views. He has been an advisor to the Panhellenic Association of Free Theatre (PEEΘ) since 1975 and to the Hellenic Theatre Centre since 1977. He is also a member of the Association of British Actors.

He is married to the actress Elli Fotiou, with whom he has two children, Margarita (1968), for many years director of the Second Programme of Greek Radio, and Alexis (1970).
