At the Meximou Mansion, Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Emanuel Macron, after their joint presence on the frigate “Kimon” in Piraeus.
This visit was highly symbolic, as it is linked to the close cooperation between the two countries in the field of defence.
The two leaders will attend the signing of the renewed Strategic Relationship Agreement on security and defense, originally concluded in 2021. The agreement includes the well-known mutual defense assistance clause, which is triggered in the event of a threat to the sovereignty of either state.
The signing will be undertaken on the Greek side by ministers Giorgos Gerapetritis and Nikos Dendias. The French side will be joined by Benjamin Haddad, responsible for European affairs, and the Armed Forces minister.
The agreement is being renewed as it was nearing the end of its five-year term. It now provides for automatic renewal every five years unless either party chooses to terminate it.
In parallel, new partnerships are also being launched in the areas of education and innovation. In the field of research, the two sides are expected to enter into a memorandum of understanding on the development of small modular reactors (SMR), further strengthening bilateral cooperation.
