Konstantinos Tasoulas demonstrates the dynamics of the relationship Greece-France, on the occasion of the visit of Emmanuel Macron to Athens.
In a statement to the newspaper “TA NEA”, he said that the ties between the two countries have now acquired the character of a strong alliance.
More specifically, in his statement, Mr Tasoulas said:
“Greece and France are linked by historical ties of friendship. The two peoples, after all, have always been on the same side in the great battles of humanity for freedom and peace. Greeks do not forget France’s support for the struggle for the restoration of democracy in 1974 and for the country’s accession to the EOK, as well as for remaining in the Eurozone during the difficult years of the economic crisis. We also appreciate France’s firm and principled stance on the Cyprus issue, which remains an international problem of illegal invasion and occupation.
Today, this multi-level relationship has been transformed into a strong alliance that is already bearing fruit. From defence to energy and from education to tourism, Greece and France are working closely together, achieving tangible results for the benefit of both peoples and Europe as a whole.
Recently, Greece and France, in an unprecedented show of solidarity, responded jointly to the Republic of Cyprus’ request for defence assistance in the light of the consequences of the military conflict in the Middle East.
Moreover, the two countries share common values and perceptions of what is needed to address the major challenges facing Europe and our world today. Immigration, energy security, economic stability, the competitiveness of the European economy, common defence, are some of the most critical issues on which Greece and France are in common.
I therefore firmly believe that in an era of rapid geopolitical changes and repeated crises, the partnership between Greece and France is not only a vehicle for security and stability, but also a model of cooperation in Europe’s effort to achieve strategic autonomy, with a commitment to the principles of democracy, human rights, the rule of law and respect for international law.
