May be Laura Covesi has become something of an idol for the opposition in Greece, but anyone who has listened to what she has said will find it hard to separate her from a politician.
About 15 months ago the country almost turned into a big popular court of law with wooden clocks whistling in the wind and some odd guys painting tanks to convince that in tragedy in Tempe there was an illegal shipment going around that some people wanted to conceal.
Now what does this have to do with the reference to the European prosecutor. Maybe it doesn’t, maybe it does, which is what The Delphi Pythia would say, from which we saw Laura Covesi wagging her finger at the government, talking about politicians, prejudicing the outcome of a process that hasn’t even started and citing dialogue that she herself has opened with the… people, reminding the people’s spokespersons all over Greece who speak with them and on their behalf.
For example, the judicial officials in the Tempi case came to see their faces for the lot in the solicitations in a la western style, it just didn’t say “wanted“. They appeared to be subservient to the government and heard what no one has heard.
No speech was given, no interventions were made, not even leaks that could justify procedures followed and decisions made regarding the investigation they conducted. What was made public came from certain circles that had access to the file and its elements and was even made public selectively.
An investigator, officials of Justice did not…conclude, did not speak, did not take a position and the government, without having the right to know the dossier, could not take a position on what was said and what tragic things were done in the context of instrumentalization, political instrumentalization, of the accident.
In general, however, prosecutors do not comment, do not go on the air, do not make speeches about cases they are investigating. And they do so to avoid prejudging decisions and developments, to not create a climate, because that is not their role. Even when politicians criticize or say they don’t trust the judiciary – yes, those who drink water in the name of Covesi – they don’t intervene, except for their union, which calls – regardless of party affiliation – on politicians not to play games with institutions.
But Ms. Covesi has no such problems. She comes to Greece, gives interviews, makes speeches, lambasts politicians and talks to the people, some of whom send her emails, maybe letters or whatever. Who she sees as spokesmen for the people and the truth, just as she does. Reminiscent of some political leaders who meet, as they say, ordinary citizens who urge them to do this or that.
It’s certain that Covesi’s fans don’t like it, but what she has chosen to do is practicing politics and influencing the judiciary. No matter how much she blames politicians for it. One only has to read or listen to everything he (told us) on the Delphi forum…
