Greece has co-signed a joint statement to the UN condemning Iranian actions that threaten global security and supply chains.
Greece was strongly present at a wide international initiative to defend the sea lanes, which took place at the United Nations headquarters.
More than 90 states, through a joint statement read by the Foreign Minister of Bahrain, expressed their deep concern over the escalating tensions in the Sea of Hormuz, warning of the global consequences of a potential trade disruption.
The international community focused on the need to adhere to Security Council Resolution 2817, denouncing Iran’s attacks and attempts to impose illegal restrictions on navigation.
According to the statement, freedom of the seas is a cornerstone of global prosperity, and any attempt to undermine it is against international stability.
The participating countries placed particular emphasis on the following points:
- Full support for the resolution that “condemns Iran’s attacks against its neighbours“.
- Rejecting any attempt to “impose tolls” or other illegal measures that violate the Law of the Sea.
- Recognition that Iranian actions “increase costs and cause turbulence in energy markets“.
- Ongoing cooperation with IMO for the smooth resumption of shipping activities.
The text clearly underlines that “the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the ongoing attacks on the Strait pose a threat to international security“, and stresses that freedom of navigation cannot be unlawfully suspended.
This initiative, which remains open to new member states, is expected to feature heavily in the upcoming high-level discussion of the Security Council, where the global community will be asked to take a stand on the challenges threatening critical supply chains.
