Weather: Despite the fact that we are in the third day of May, the peaks of Parnitha and Penteli were dressed in white in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The snowfall was enough to cause snowdrifts at the higher elevations.

This development led to a temporary stoppage of traffic on Parnithos Avenue. The police took the measure from the height of the cable car and above, as a precautionary measure.

For the second day in a row, the mountains north of the Basin are affected by the bad weather, which, according to estimates by National Weather Service, is in its final stage.

In general, no serious problems have been recorded on the road network of Attica.

The phenomena are more intense in mountainous areas of central Greece and the Peloponnese. Heavy snowfall and extensive snowdrifts are recorded in areas such as Kalavryta, Ziria Korinthia and Parnassos, according to images transmitted by local authorities.

This week’s weather

A clear improvement in the weather has been recorded since the beginning of the week, with longer intervals of sunshine, more slow winds and gradual rising temperatures, bringing back more mild spring conditions across the country.

According to meteorologist Giannis Kallianou‘s forecast, the chilly backdrop recedes and is replaced by a sensitive thermal rise later in the week.

Following an unusually cold weekend for early May, the atmospheric circulation gradually changes, leading to more stable and mild weather. On Monday 4 May, temperatures will reach 22-24°C on the mainland and up to 21°C on the islands, with the picture improving markedly.

The rise in temperature continues on Tuesday and Wednesday, where maximum values will reach 26-28°C on the mainland and 22-25°C on the islands. On Thursday, further heat is expected, with mercury reaching as high as 28-30°C in several areas.

Our focus turns to the end of the week, as there is a possibility of transport of warm air masses from North Africa, which may lead to above normal temperatures for the season, especially during the weekend of 9-10 May.

However, as noted, this scenario has yet to be specified, as further confirmation from the predictive models is needed to determine the extent and duration of the eventual heat invasion.

Kairos: Unusual heat and thunderstorms in May

The weather in May in Europe is expected to experience extraordinarily high temperatures but also periods of storms, according to the latest forecasts from meteorologists.

Early this month, North and Central Europe will experience particularly temperate weather, and as May progresses, the warm weather will extend almost across the continent. This gradual warming is expected to increase demand for climate, while also boosting drought in some areas.

According to meteorologist William Henneberg of the Commodity Weather Group, the wave of heat that will peak in the second week of May will be temporarily interrupted by storms. These systems will mainly affect North and Eastern Europe, dropping temperatures by 2 to 4 degrees below normal. However, the warm trend will quickly return.

During the second half of the month, precipitation may provide some relief in countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Spain, where rainfall levels in April were extremely low, just 12% to 17% of normal values.

But that’s about it, meteorologist Steve Silver of Vaisala warns that these precipitation will only have temporary effect and will not be able to reverse the overall picture of the drought, particularly in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

The weather changes will also affect energy. Periods of warm, dry and sunny weather will boost production from solar energy, while solar energy will remain unstable.

According to MetDesk, periods of low wind speeds are expected throughout the month. A temporary strengthening of winds is possible around 11 May in areas such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Iberian Peninsula, before the wind chill returns again towards the end of the month.
