The Minister of Rural Development and Food, Margaritis Schinas, is travelling to Nicosia today Monday and tomorrow Tuesday to participate in the work of the European Union.
The Agriculture Council (4 May) will discuss the response to the growing crises in the agricultural sector, with a focus on the impact of climate change, natural disasters and market volatility. The focus will be on the need to strengthen the prevention and resilience of European agriculture, with a view to ensuring the production and food security of the European Union.
As part of the Council meeting on Fisheries, a key topic of discussion will be the evaluation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), the fundamental European framework for the management of fisheries resources. The evaluation covers the last years and is the first comprehensive assessment of the current regulation, based on criteria such as effectiveness, efficiency, coherence and added value for the European Union.
According to the evidence so far, the evaluation process has identified challenges related to the sustainability of fish stocks, the complexity of the regulatory framework, as well as the need to strengthen the integration of policies related to climate change, marine pollution and the integration of the EU’s fisheries sector into the EU’s fisheries policy.
