Stavros Tsochos, one of the most recognizable and beloved figures in sports journalism, is no longer with us. The news of his death was deeply saddening, as he was a man with a long and distinguished career, both on the field as a footballer and later in journalism.
His career began in soccer in 1954, when he signed his first contract with Hyperochi Neapolis of Athens. His talent led him in 1956 to Olympiacos, along with Mimi Stefanakos. He played for the Piraeus team until 1961, with a brief stint with Proodeftiki in the 1958-59 season. He completed his football career in the early 1960s with the Fotiras jersey, having recorded appearances in the First National League.
Immediately after his retirement, he devoted himself to journalism. His career in the press included collaborations with historical newspapers such as “Day”, “Acropolis”, “Nea”for two decades, and “Light of Sports”, as well as with the magazines “Proto” and “Protos” and “Protasθληma”.
In 1968 he made his debut on television, where he established himself as one of the leading presenters of sports shows and match broadcasts, both in Greece and abroad. His voice and presence were associated with the channels of ERT, MEGA and ANT1. At the same time, he also offered his services as the director of the press office of P.A.E.. Olympiacos, completing a life cycle dedicated to sports.
