The Greek minister and the European commissioner focused on the implementation of the new rules customs and strengthening the security of the European border.
With a key focus on the implementation of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, the Minister for Migration and Asylum, meeting of Minister for Migration and Asylum, Thanos Plevris with the European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, took place today in Brussels. The meeting focused on immigration developments and the protection of European borders.
The minister presented Greece’s readiness for the full implementation of the new European framework, stressing that the necessary operational and administrative adjustments are underway to ensure its effective implementation.
Special reference was made to the situation in the Eastern Aegean, where, according to the data presented, there is a reduction of illegal migration flows by about 70%. As noted, this development is attributed to increased border security, as well as cooperation with the Turkish authorities and Frontex.
The discussion also focused on the situation in Libya, with the two sides examining the possibility of increased migratory pressure on Crete and measures needed to deal with possible new flows.
The minister and the European Commissioner, according to a ministry statement, agreed on the need for full implementation of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, with particular emphasis on strengthening returns and effective protection of European borders.
