The prosecution proposal remains unchanged in the second instance, with the French judicial authorities calling for an exemplary punishment for Sarkozy for his links to the Gaddafi regime.
The imposition of a prisonment of seven years, accompanied by a fine of 300,000 euros and five years’ disqualification from voting, has been reintroduced by the prosecution against former French president Nicolas Sarkozy.
The case concerns allegations of illegal financing of his 2007 election campaign by the Muammar Gaddafi regime, a case that has caused strong tremors in the French political scene.
Prosecutor General Rodolphe Jouy-Birman, maintaining the same tough stance he had displayed at first instance, stressed before the court the need for the former president to be treated without favour, like any other citizen, and to be punished in proportion to the gravity of the acts attributed to him.
The proposal reflects the willingness of the judicial authorities to fully unravel the shadows surrounding the sources of the 2007 campaign’s funding, while Sarkozy continues to deny any accusation, citing political persecution.
