Department of Public Power is transforming into a clean technology company today.

The transformation of Department of Public Power from a energy company to a clean energy company and technology company today and then to the adoption of Artificial Intelligence and in becoming active in the data center sector was described by the chairman and CEO of PPC and vice chairman of Eurelectric Giorgos Stassis, speaking today at the European organisation’s annual conference in Helsinki.

“PPC was an electricity company. Today it is a clean technology company. Tomorrow PPC will be a data centre company, maybe an AI applications company,” he said.

Stassis stressed that the energy and digital transition are happening simultaneously today and reiterated the need for the infrastructure for data centres, which require large amounts of energy, to be developed in a way that will not burden household electricity bills due to the increase in demand.

He noted that Power Corporation has already adopted cloud computing solutions for storing its data and is gradually moving to deploy AI applications in all sectors where it operates.

For example, AI tools are being applied in areas such as the integration of Renewable Energy Sources in the market, the maintenance of facilities, energy management and the reduction of energy losses. He also spoke of developing AI applications in collaboration with the shipping industry and the legal department of PPC.

“We are at the intersection between energy and technology and we feel we are getting closer and closer to the technology space,” he said.

The PPC chief stressed the need to develop data centres in Europe for security reasons as to where data is stored and underlined that the EU has a great opportunity to create value from new technology but does not have much time to do so.
