The three new airport of Elefsis arrived at the helicopters of type Leonardo AW139, which are part of the planning to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection and the Fire Brigade.

The helicopters are intended for personnel transport, aerial operations coordination, search and rescue, and air ambulance missions, significantly enhancing operational readiness and response to emergency situations.

The Leonardo AW139 features powerful engines, advanced air navigation systems capable of carrying up to 15 passengers, offering a high level of safety. Thanks to its reliability, performance and
operational flexibility, it is one of the most widely used helicopters in its class internationally.

The configuration of the newly acquired helicopters includes modern systems and equipment, such as a rescue winch (hoist), emergency floats, external cargo sling, medical equipment and electro-optical/infrared camera (EO/IR) to enable them to respond efficiently and safely to a wide range of operational missions.

The next step will be the acceptance process by the relevant committee, which is expected to be completed by the end of June. The procurement of the helicopters is being implemented through the “AEGIS” programme and funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund. Their inclusion further enhances the Civil Protection Mechanism’s air support capabilities, particularly in the areas of search and rescue, air ambulance and crisis management. The formal integration of the new assets will take place at a later stage, following the completion of the foreseen procedures.
