Greek fighter aircraft and frigates are establishing a permanent presence in Cyprus, strengthening deterrence, surveillance, and bilateral defense.

Nicosia is promoting the permanent presence of fighter jets from the Air Force in Cyprus, as part of further deepening defense cooperation with Athens and strengthening the deterrent power of the Republic of Cyprus.

Protection of Cyprus’s FIR, a new model of air presence

The Cypriot side seeks more effective protection of the Cypriot FIR, especially following the attack on the British base at Akrotiri. According to information from the Cypriot newspaper “Fileleftheros,” the model currently in place, with the presence of Greek F-16s at the Paphos air base, appears to form the basis for a more permanent air force deployment.

The same sources report that, in addition to the rotation of crews, the possibility of rotating the type of aircraft that will be stationed or operate from Cypriot territory is also being considered. Currently, Greek F-16s are currently stationed in Cyprus, while at a later stage it is not ruled out that they may be replaced by F-4 Phantoms.

Operational cooperation with benefits for the National Guard

The presence of Greek fighter jets also serves as a training ground for the National Guard General Staff, strengthening cooperation, coordination, and interoperability with the Hellenic Air Force.

Through joint activities, Cypriot forces gain valuable experience in complex operational scenarios, enhancing their readiness and effectiveness.

Frigates in the EEZ – Strengthening maritime deterrence

A similar philosophy appears to be adopted at sea, as plans are underway for a permanent presence of a Greek frigate in the Cypriot EEZ. The goal is to strengthen surveillance and protection of the area, as well as to counter potential asymmetric threats originating from the Middle East.

At the same time, the continuous presence of units from the Hellenic Navy will offer the Cypriot naval forces more opportunities for joint training and gaining operational experience.

Currently in Cyprus is the frigate “Elli”, which is equipped with two 76-millimeter OTO Melara naval guns, two Phalanx close-in weapon systems, Harpoon surface-to-surface missiles, and Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missiles. In addition, it is equipped with anti-submarine warfare capabilities and electronic countermeasure systems.
