Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis clarified, during the briefing of political editors, that there is no question of …
As he said, “in such votes it is not usual for there to be a question of party discipline, nor will there be in this case,” stressing that the attitude of MPs will be shaped by their conscience and their institutional role.
At the same time, he pointed out that the same deputies have requested the lifting of their immunity, stating that this does not constitute an admission of guilt but, on the contrary, “an expression of confidence in their innocence” and an intention to prove it before the justice system. He warned, however, that discussions of differentiations may create misleading impressions, stating that“if the lifting of immunity for some is not voted for and voted for by others, it is like discounting who is innocent and who is guilty”.
He concluded by noting that MPs, as erepresentatives of citizens, have the final say in such a process, calling for avoiding hasty conclusions based on leaks.
