Reassessment of access and stay restrictions in Santorini due to seismic activity and scientific recommendations for reinforcement of Civil Protection measures.

Following the latest developments in the Aegean volcanic arc and the increased scientific monitoring of seismic activity, a new Joint Ministerial Decision (CSI) puts into implementation updated civil protection measures in Santorini, aiming to manage seismic risk and volcanic activity in the wider region, with the relevant authorities reassessing the restrictions on access and stay in sensitive zones of the volcano and the caldron, in the context of preventing and enhancing the safety of residents and visitors.

The new Joint Ministerial Decision was published concerning the adoption of civil protection measures in the island complex of Santorini.

Scientists’ unanimous recommendation

The decision bears the signatures of relevant ministries, including Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, National Economy, Interior, Civil Protection, Development, Shipping and Tourism.

The EIA incorporates the unanimous recommendation of the scientists, following the recent extraordinary meeting of the Standing Scientific Committee for Seismic Risk Assessment and Seismic Risk Reduction, as well as the Standing Scientific Committee for Monitoring the Greek Volcanic Arc of the OASP and the recommendation of the Risk Assessment Committee.

These regulations were deemed necessary due to the geodynamic phenomena recorded in the wider area.
