Repairs and improvements to more than two hundred schools across Greece include the second phase of the Marietta Giannakou School Building Renovation Program.

The signing of the second phase of the program is expected to be announced and signed, on Thursday, May 7, at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport by the relevant ministers, representatives of the four donors Banks (Alpha Bank, Eurobank, National Bank and Piraeus) and “Building Infrastructures S.A.”

According to information, next summer more than 220 schools across the country will be renovated through the “Marietta Giannakou” programme, while already in 2025 extensive interventions were implemented in more than 430 schools.

These are interventions that will significantly change for the better the teaching and working environment of thousands of students.

The “Marietta Giannakou” programme was launched at the initiative of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis with the aim of interventions in more than 2,500 school units.

The programme is funded with a significant amount of money from the Hellenic Bankers’ Association, as the trustee of the four donor banks (Alpha Bank, Eurobank, National Bank and Piraeus).

The total budget of the programme according to the planning is €650 million. EUR 250 million is allocated from the Public Investment Programme for the interventions in schools and the remaining EUR 400 million is a contribution from the four systemic banks (EUR 100 million was given in the first phase of the programme and the remaining EUR 300 million will be made available through additional donations over three years).

Under the first phase of the programme, which was completed and financed, through donations, with 100 million euros from the above four systemic banks, there were interventions in 431 school units in 245 municipalities and in 13 regions of the country.

Interventions

The interventions implemented include, among others:

Renovation of sanitary facilities & creation of accessible W.C. for the disabled,

Repairs of ramps for the disabled,

Interior and exterior painting,

Courtyard improvements, with basketball and volleyball courts, and playgrounds in kindergartens.

Priority based on the program design was given to:

Special schools,

Primary schools in border, island and frontier areas and

Schools in areas affected by natural disasters.
