The Electronic National Social Security Institution (e-EFKA) is entering a decisive phase of full digital transformation.
The new Integrated Information System (O.P.S.), a landmark project, is set to fundamentally reshape the way social security operates in Greece.
As stated in a related announcement, it is, in essence, a total reboot of the insurance information environment, as the new O.P.S. upgrades essentially all the critical functions of the institution: from the management of contributions and insurance time to the control mechanisms and the award of benefits and pensions.
In practice, the system creates the conditions for single application of insurance rules, faster issuance of pensions, immediate adaptation to regulatory changes, enhanced administrative efficiency and improved collectability.
A single digital ecosystem for social security
The new O.P.S. is not just a technological upgrade, but the transition to a single digital social security ecosystem.
All individual information systems are being integrated into a modern, coherent and interoperable environment that seamlessly connects to critical public institutions such as Independent Public Revenue Authority (A.A.D.E.) and the General Commercial Register (G.E.M.I.).
This way, as noted in the announcement, the transparency of procedures is enhanced, administrative gaps are reduced and a stable framework for data exchange with high reliability is created.
The benefits in practice: speed, transparency, efficiency
According to the announcement, the implementation of the new system is expected to have an immediate and tangible impact on the daily lives of citizens and businesses.
Specifically, the new system will bring about:
– Acceleration in the award of pensions, with the introduction of uniform and automated procedures that significantly reduce delays.
– Electronic Analytical Periodic Declaration (A.P.D.), which ensures accuracy of insurance data and timely recording of employers’ obligations.
– Reduction of bureaucracy in practice, through the new employer register and digital management of the movement of documents, reducing the need for physical presence at the institution’s offices.
– Strengthening transparency and the control mechanism, with more efficient monitoring of contributions and better protection of the rights of employees.
A nationwide information cycle with the active participation of institutional stakeholders
In the context of the implementation of the project, the administrator of eEFKA, Dr. Alexandros Varveris, presented the strategic plan of the institution in Patras on 5 May 2026, successfully continuing a cycle of information events that have already taken place in major cities of the region, such as Heraklion, Crete and Larissa, while similar actions are planned for Thessaloniki and Athens.
These events are not just informative initiatives, but are part of a broader strategy of consultation and institutional transparency, aiming at the active participation of all stakeholders in this major reform transition.
The strong presence of representatives of local government, chambers of commerce, as well as accountants and tax advisors, confirms in practice the need for continuous dialogue and cooperation in such a complex and critical undertaking.
Part of the national digital transformation
The work of the new O.It is part of the broader digital transformation planning of the Greek state and is being implemented in the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, funded by the European Union through the Next Generation EU programme.
According to the announcement, in this way, social security in Greece enters a new phase of institutional and operational maturity: more unified, modern and technologically advanced.
In this new environment, the administrative capacity of the institution is substantially strengthened and the interoperability of systems is upgraded, ensuring the provision of modern services, focusing on reliability and transparency, to citizens and businesses.
