Scenes of panic occurred shortly after 11:30 Sunday morning (10/5) outside a well-known bar in Callithea when a 58-year-old man allegedly shot the store owner after a heated incident with her husband.
According to reports, the man had arrived at the store earlier and attempted to enter the premises, where about 30 people were present at the time. The 43-year-old owner and her husband tried to keep him out, as he was visibly intoxicated and was causing tension.
The 58-year-old man eventually managed to get into the bar, but a few minutes later he was out of control. According to witnesses, before leaving he shouted: “I’m going to kill you all.”
Soon after, he returned holding a suzi automatic weapon, which he allegedly took from a rental car parked near the scene. He then opened fire toward the store’s entrance, wounding the owner in the back and neck.
The woman, despite her injuries, reportedly went to the hospital on her own for first aid. Reports indicate that her health is not a cause for concern.
There was panic at the scene, with patrons and workers running for cover. Heavy forces of the Police were immediately mobilised., while men of the OPCE located and arrested the offender a short distance from the bar.
Authorities are now looking into the 58-year-old’s background and how the gun came to be in his possession. At the same time, security camera footage and eyewitness statements are being collected to fully clarify the circumstances of the bloody incident.
