At the discretion of the Supreme Judicial Council is the renewal or replacement of the Greek Europrosecutors, which meets tomorrow.
Specifically, the Supreme Judicial Council will meet tomorrow, Monday 11 May, to decide whether the current appointed European prosecutors Popi Papandreou, Charicleia Thanou and Dionysis Mouzakis will remain in their posts or whether the process of selecting new persons will be initiated.
The recommendation for the persons proposed to fill the disputed positions will be made by the vice-president of the Supreme Court Panagiotis Liberopoulos. Tthe Supreme Judicial Council will meet under its 11-member composition (which is determined by lot), with the participation of the President, the Prosecutor, seven lay judges and two deputy prosecutors of the Supreme Court, while all candidates will be present in person. A total of nine prosecutors have reportedly expressed interest in the posts.
On the issue of non-renewal of the terms of office for the three European prosecutors, Popi Papandreou, Harikleia Thanou and Dionysis Mouzakis, a controversy has arisen between the head of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, Laura Covesi and the Greek side, which attributes to the head of the European Public Prosecutor that she rushed to announce the renewal of the mandate of Papandreou, Thanou and Mouzakis for another five years, before the Supreme Judicial Council had given its opinion, as required by law.
For her part, Laura Covesi has pointed to the European Court of Justice in case the Supreme Judicial Council of the Supreme Court does not renew the mandate of the three appointed European prosecutors in Greece, which expires at the end of June.
Therefore, the Supreme Judicial Council’s verdict on what to do next is awaited.
